Explosion Takes Three Law Enforcement Officers During Property Removal Action in Northern Italy
Three police officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion took place as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three officers killed served in the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female got detained at the scene and another man who fled following the explosion was located not long after. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene revealed the property left as a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member caused the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor believed the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
