Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates locations across the country and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the annual new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner informed the press that he was "taken aback at the final price," adding, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."
This most recent purchase tops his previous record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've started the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one elated patron.
